After a night out in Bali, symptoms such as headache, nausea, fatigue, poor sleep, and thirst can make the next day difficult. Rest, time, food when tolerated, and oral fluids are appropriate for many people. Mobile IV therapy may be considered in selected cases after clinical assessment, but it is not a guaranteed hangover cure.
What Causes Hangover Symptoms?
Hangovers are complex. Alcohol can affect hydration, sleep, the stomach, blood vessels, inflammation, and alcohol metabolism. The severity of symptoms varies according to the amount consumed, individual biology, food intake, sleep, other substances, and underlying health.
Dehydration can contribute to some symptoms, but it is not the only cause. Rehydration alone may therefore not eliminate a hangover.
Oral Hydration or IV Fluids?
People who can drink and keep fluids down can often begin with oral fluids or an oral rehydration solution. IV fluids bypass the digestive system, but faster delivery into the bloodstream does not prove faster or complete hangover recovery.
IV hydration may be considered when a qualified healthcare professional determines that oral intake is not adequate or appropriate. Persistent vomiting, severe dehydration, confusion, fainting, chest pain, breathing difficulty, seizure, or reduced consciousness requires urgent medical evaluation.
What May Be Included in Treatment?
Treatment depends on symptoms, medical history, medications, allergies, and clinical findings. It may include IV fluids or prescribed medication when appropriate. Vitamins or electrolytes should not be presented as automatically depleted or necessary for every hangover.
Anti-nausea or pain medication should only be administered after assessment by a qualified professional. These medicines have contraindications, interactions, and potential side effects. They are not automatically included.
What Does the Evidence Show?
High-quality evidence specifically supporting commercial IV drips as a reliable hangover treatment is limited. Evidence that a fluid or medication is useful in dehydration, migraine, surgery, chemotherapy, or emergency care cannot automatically be applied to an otherwise healthy person with a hangover.
Claims that IV therapy cures a hangover, works within a fixed time, or is always better than oral hydration are not established.
Safer Recovery Steps
- Stop drinking alcohol and avoid “hair of the dog.”
- Rest and sip water or oral rehydration fluids if tolerated.
- Eat light food when comfortable.
- Avoid taking medication without checking whether it is safe after alcohol use.
- Seek medical help for severe, unusual, or worsening symptoms.
This article is for general education and is not medical advice. IV therapy should not replace urgent care, diagnosis, or treatment of alcohol poisoning or another medical condition.
